Nine million Germans – equivalent to every sixth citizen – have searched for a partner on the internet, according to a new study conducted by Bitkom Research in corporation with Aris. More than a third (36%) were successful and found a partner.

Online dating is particularly popular among young people between the ages of 14 and 29, among whom every fourth (23%) has tried it. This drops to 16 per cent in the age group of 30 to 49 years and further to 14 per cent among the 50 to 64-year-olds.

Dating apps based on GPS are only used by 2 percent of users. Even though every eighth German (12%) has signed up for a dating website, the study showed that only eight per cent are actively using the service.

Websites that are free of charge are more popular; only 25 per cent of users were willing to pay.
